There are three basic stances (Dachi):
1. Sanchin Dachi (three battle stance)
2. Zen Kutsu Dachi (forward leaning stance)
3. Shika Dachi (Square or Sumo stance)
There are three basic punches (Tsuki)
Plus a counter punch by defender at the end of the drill.
First 3 punches by attacker all performed over lead leg:
1. Jodan Oi Tsuki (upper level lunge punch)
2. Chudan Oi Tsuki (middle area lunge punch)
3. Gedan Oi Tsuki (lower area lunge punch)
Then: Counter attack by defender Chudan Gyaku Tsuki
(Middle area reverse punch) performed from Shika Dachi into a Fudo Dachi (immovable stance - a stance between Zen Kutsu Dachi and Shika Dachi which allows incorporation of rotational hip power on the counter punch)
This ‘Gi’ (drill or sequence), begins with a defensive move as in all Kata.
The Japanese phrase: ‘Karate ni sente nashi’ means;
“There is no first attack in Karate”
or
“There is no first strike in Karate”
